Tips to Prevent Water Damage

The stress of handling after-flood water damage can cause an interruption for you. Here are a few tips to help prevent water damage and flooding in your home:
- Clean Your Spouting and Gutters. If your home is located underneath large trees, it is a good idea to remove debris from your gutters in order to prevent clogging. Clogged debris could cause water overflow and damage to your walls and siding.
- Check Your Door and Window Sealing. In the event of heavy downpours, you will want to make sure that there are no gaps or holes in the sealing of doors and windows. This will prevent water from seeping in through the gaps and possibly causing water damage to your home. If water comes in through the sealant, then it may cause damage to other sections of the sealant as well.
- Check Your Sump Pump. Check the sump pit for debris and clogging. Ensure that the float switch is working properly. This will allow the sump pump to correctly switch on and off when water levels change. Have a plumper check your sump pump to see if any updates or new installments are needed.
- Locate Your Water Valve. In the event that there is flooding in your home, and you can find the source, shut off the water valve if possible. Although the water will still be in your home, this will ensure that no new amounts of water enter the home from that valve.
